“ Too late to go back now! And don't even think about jumping in, because then we'd have to shoot you!
—Asrif to Torak, Spirit Walker, chapter 16
Asrif is a member of the Seal Clan and is one of Bale's best friends. He first appears in Spirit Walker when Bale, Detlan and he decide to take Torak to the Seal clan. Before skinboating Torak to the Seal Island, Detlan and he strip him of his clothes and throw him into a fire to clean him.
Appearance[]
- Asrif is smaller than Detlan and Bale. Like his companions, Asrif has a sun-darkened face with long yellow hair beaded with shells. He wears a clear, light, yellowish hide made of gutskin, and gray hide from gray seals. As a Seal Clan member, his clan-creature skin is a stripe of a ring-seal. His clan-tattoos are wavy blue lines over his arms. He carries a slingshot in his belt.[1]
History[]
Spirit Walker[]
- Asrif, Detlan, and Bale arrive in the Forest to trade with Whale Clan when they discover Torak breaking the law of the Sea by washing his gear in the ocean. He's taken prisoner by the three Seal Clan boys, and Asrif mocks Torak by calling him "Forest Boy." When they arrive at Seal Island, Asrif is scolded by his mother. Later, Asrif and Bale search for Torak when he goes missing, and Torak shows them the seal net that he almost drowned in. Asrif accompanies Torak, Bale, and Detlan to the Heights to fetch the selik root that Tenris needed to create the cure for the sickness. He climbs up the cliffs using the climbing pegs, though his harness gets snagged, and Torak climbs up to help him. After Torak falls into the Sea and the notched-fin Hunter breaks Detlan's leg, Asrif and Detlan stay behind while Tenris, Torak, and Bale return to the Seal Clan camp to create the cure. After Tenris is defeated, hunters bring Asrif and Detlan home.
Oath Breaker[]
- After Bale's death, Asrif provides Bale a food bowl for the Death Journey.
Personality[]
Asrif is short-tempered and does not trust anyone from the forest like Torak or Renn. He tends to sneer at people from the forest.
